Couples on Couches
Digital photographs on cotton fine art paper, various dimensions, 2013-2014
Couples on Couches is a photo series featuring portraits of real-life couples pictured on their own couches in their homes. The people in the images include parents, entrepreneurs, artists, musicians, writers, healers, scientists, and scholars, and all either live in Prince Edward Island or have ties to the province.
The goal of this project was initially an aesthetic one and I approached couples whose looks I think make a really interesting pair. The project slowly took on a role of documenting my immediate social landscape, my experience of being part of a couple, and the other examples I see of this dynamic in my daily life. The models were asked to remain straight-faced and keep a distance from each other. In a sense each image presents a different version of the same couple, together yet separate, in an environment created by the two of them.
This project was presented thanks to the generous support of The Prince Edward Island Council of the Arts.
